Billy Powell Bass
Rock Solid

Billy P was born in Texas and grew up Out West in Arizona, Nevada, California, and Wyoming. Bill has lived in Madison WI. for over 20 years. He grew up in a musical family. His grandfather played the fiddle, his grandmother played the piano, and his many uncles played guitars, harmonicas, and accordions. Everybody sang. The family spent many nights scattered around porches and living rooms from Texas to California. With that musical background Bill was soon into the early Rock and Roll scene. Inspired by the British and American interpretations of some of the old Black Blues standards, Bill moved away from his Country roots for a few years. During this time he also met and started writing with Ted Ramirez in Tucson. They focused more on folk music than Rock and Roll and Blues.

After moving to Madison Bill joined the Snowbillies. He was with them for almost 2 years during which time he purchased the Anchor Inn in Madison. During the 5 years Bill owned and actively ran the Anchor he ran Live Music 5 nights a week. The week started with the Monday night Rock Stew, Tuesdays had Tate and the Million Dollar Blues Band when he moved over from OKayz. Friday and Saturday were a mix of Country, Rock, and Blues. Sunday afternoons brought the Country Jams hosted by the Dixie Drifter, Mr. Jim Dawson. Sunday nights the weekends were closed out by Robert J and his Blues Jams.  This gave Bill the opportunity to sit in with a veritable whos who of Madison area musicians. After leaving the Snowbillies Bill started the Rock and Roll band Captain Z. From there Bill went on to play with Jerry Harrington and Hot Walker, Denny Dean and the Cadillac Cowboyz, and his own band C.W. Express. The C.W. Express band enjoyed a lot of local area success and released a 6 song album of originals entitled Western Wind. The band was on the brink of a national tour with BSW Records out of San Antonio when they broke up. He is one of the founding members of the King Bees who played in the area for over 8 years. As a fill-in bass player Bill rarely has a weekend off.

A little known fact: Bills grandfather, Morris Leffew grew up on a farm in Texas next to Bob Wills and his family. He has a fiddle that Bob gave to Morris many years ago
